For their first project, students were asked to use existing footage (from Bresson's film "Pickpocket") to make a new piece. Using existing footage eliminated the technical hurdles of shooting and capturing while providing limitations to the projects that ultimately spurred creative solutions; students were given about 10 minutes of silent video, no background on the film, and no effects or transitions were allowed (unless cut from the footage itself).
REMAKE OLD MASTER PAINTING
Students were given images of three old master paintings and were asked to shoot and edit a video that was inspired by one of them. Rather than make a moving version of the painting, students were asked to bring out ideas or images from the painting that were of interest to them.
DISCONNECTED TIME
Given examples of disconnected audio in film (especially scenes from "Godfather 2") and a short excerpt from Basho's "Narrow Road to the Interior", students shot video and recorded audio-only tracks for a project based on these ideas. Students were asked to explore the idea of time and merge times, places, and sounds from times/places that weren't directly connected.
CABINET OF CURIOSITY as SELF PORTRAIT
In a series of projects intended to introduce students to Photoshop, students were shown a slide lecture about the history of collage with a focus on early Cubism, Dada, Rauschenberg, and Joseph Cornell as well as a brief history of the cabinet of curiosity. Using images of boards to cut and build cabinets in Photoshop, students put in images that help symbolic resonance and put together a picture of who they are.
