TRANSART WORKSHOP - TRANSFORMATIVE PRACTICE

During July of 2007, I taught a workshop at Transart Institute's summer residency, part of their low-residency MFA program. The course, titled "Transformative Practice" focused on identifying one's practice (both of art-making and of living) and then finding strategies for subverting, redirecting, blocking, or pulling the rug out from under that practice.

After a series of short exercises, mostly performance based, we began a group performance/installation that went on for several days and many iterations. Historical performance scores mixed with ones written by the students, found materials, sound exercises, and radically and rapidly shifting "rules" directed the process.

Like the focus of the class, the documentation below is of a process rather than a finished product.
