DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS - - NON-TRADITIONAL DRAWING

Rutgers University Mason Gross School of Art

The images below represent student work from Drawing Fundamentals I and II, taught at Rutgers University in the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006.

While most of the course focused on traditional drawing, another goal of the course was showing students the expanded practice of drawing. These assignments represent that course work.

DRAWING MACHINES
Various media

Students were asked to create machines to make a repetitive mark that would be otherwise difficult or impossible by hand. The machines were made, for the most part, with few or no tools and with trash and scrap materials. A class period of building was followed by a class of implementing the machines.

HEAVY METAL AIR GUITAR DRAWINGS
Graphite on cardboard

A (very cheesy, ridiculous) heavy metal song was played at the end of each class for several weeks. On the last day of class students strapped on cardboard guitars, taped short pencils to their fingers and, to the sound of the song, made heavy metal air guitar drawings.

Part drawing, part performance art, this project's aim was to liberate the mark and show students that composed, staid mark-making is not the only legitimate way to draw.

Some of these guitars are broken, as students were asked to smash their guitars at the end of the song.
