EXPANDED REMIX

Transart Institute

Below is documentation from a workshop titled "Expanded Remix", dealing with the ways in which remixing works, and how it can be extended to other art practices, cultural processes, and other non-art ideas.

The main goal of the workshop was to promote dialog about the remix as an idea. Rather than catalog, which is a process of finding the limits of something, we engaged in a process of expanding the idea of remix. Assignments ranged from documentation of the city through walking, iterative projects, and video game hacking.

In addition, during the week the class built a wiki to add ideas, artists, and other resources around the idea of expanded remix. This became a resource and a forum for exploration and, due to the edit-ability of the wiki format, students remixed each other's ideas by placing images and texts in strategic (and often funny) locations.

Documentation of the workshop is below.
The wiki page can be viewed here.

["Copy as Remix"; iterative processes, one source -- 20 derivitives in 40 minutes]

["Geographic Mashup"; group project using sampled material from they city, geography as raw material]

["Geographic Mashup"; another group project combining place names and colors derived from location names converted to hex values]

["Geography as Mashup"; four-channel video project documenting graffiti on a bridge in Linz]

["Breakout Mod"; students were given a working video game built in Processing to hack, stills from that project]
