Spaces was created using the first ten of Shakespeare's sonnets, or rather the spaces between the words.
The sonnet is essentially a grid of 10 beats/14 lines - a structure which has a mirror in the structure of music. The placement of the spaces between words was used to determine notes on the C major scale, each chord being a line in the sonnet.
