Battleship Music
2006
Set of three audio recordings, infinitely looped
Game 1 - Jeff vs. Dara [mp3]
Game 2 - Jeff vs. Angela [mp3]
Game 3 - Jeff vs. George [mp3]
The layout of a game of Battleship is basically the same as programming drums or other musical instruments in a computer. Three games of Battleship were played with three different people. The resulting guesses, marked on the vertical section with white and red pegs, were transcribed as notes within a MIDI sequencing program.
The vertical position of the pegs determined the note (in the key of C). The horizontal position determined placement in time. The red pegs (hits in the game) were made louder than the white pegs (misses). The short melody was then looped.
