Zomen Masks

Also from “Music of a Thousand Autumns: The Togaku Style of Japanese Court Music”, these zomen masks are worn when a dancer is portraying a diety.  Traditionally made from paper, they are also made from silk.

Sadly, I could find no other images and only a handful of references.

Bugaku Mask

A Japanese Bugaku mask, used in the performance of Saisoro, or “the old man seeks a mulberry tree”.  According to the book “Music of A Thousand Autums: The Togaku Style of Japanese Court Music”, the mask is no longer used because “it is belived that the dancer may die soon after the performance”.
