Following a few Wikipedia trails, I found that certain numbers are “illegal”.  Often these are numeric codes for encryption of DVDs and other media.  The above number is the likely the first such number used for DVD encryption, found in 2001 by Phil Carmody.

Numbers, especially in our pervasively digital context, represent everything, and a number like the one above could easily be translated to image or other form that would not be immediately recognized but could be unpacked into the usable form.

An example of this is the so-called “Free Speech Flag“, seen above.  The “flag” in fact holds the encryption code for HD DVDs as hexadecimal color values.  This kind of steganographic image hides information within an innocuous context.  The creators of such “flags” argue that if a relatively small series of numbers can be made illegal – in this case 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 – any derivatives could be made illegal as well, including patterns of colors, MIDI notes, etc; effectively artistic works such as color schemes or melodies could in fact be subject to the US’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act and their makers could be subject to legal action.

In this spirit, here is the AACS encryption key as melody:
